Morally bankrupt Kings, fire breathing dragons, a lush landscape and lots of sex. A niche that Game of Thrones has perfectly filled on television, The Witcher series has more then adequately filled in the video game world.

Anyone who has played the first Witcher on computer will notice that there are some impressive tweaks to the gameplay in The Witcher's second incarnation. One of the major changes is the equip screen. In the original, everything was very tiny and you had to really look to discern what you had in your inventory. Now you have a list with a picture, which is easy to read. You can chose to use/equip, compare (if its an equipable item) or inspect to check out stats, uses and value. The fighting has also been tweaked magnificently. The original was somewhat like Dragon Age with the way the player attacked. It was pretty much select fight and then you fight one opponent till they drop (you don't have to but its rather clunky to switch) then select another, with the only difference being the Witcher using timed button presses. Assassin of Kings combat is a different animal completely. You still have the same magical signs as the original, a steel sword for humans and a silver sword for monsters. The difference is that you feel more immersed in the combat with your sword swings, magic spells, and overall control of the characters movements. Another great addition is Dark Mode which is a great challenge to undertake after beating the game. There is an incentive to play Dark Mode as there is unique equipment only available by achieving this difficulty mode. The Witcher feels polished on the console, even though it's been out for a year on PC. While there are some kinks and glitches that come hand in hand with porting to consoles, there is nothing that really affects the overall experience that the Witcher provides on Xbox 360. There honestly hasn't been an action-RPG this addictive since Dark Souls. It's quite an experience.

Some great RPGs in recent memory have been Dark Souls and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Both fantastic games but what tips the scale in the Witcher's favor is the story. Considering the wealth of source material, The Witcher was originally an epic book saga in Poland by Andrzej Sapkowski. So far, two novels of the series have come stateside and both are amazing reads. The player starts out the game in the camp of King Foltest who is in the middle of quelling a rebellion where some lords are trying to use two of his bastard children against him. By the way, The Witcher 2 is not for children! Your character Geralt of Riva, The White Wolf, and master Witcher is a total cooze hound, taking many women to bed which is shown in the form of cut scenes that are comparable to softcore porn. Without giving away the amazing storyline, the basis of the game is that Geralt is trying to clear his name because he has been accused of regicide (king slaying). Your decisions ultimately affect the outcome of the game and you will reach a crossroads where you decide which side of the war you will be on, for the non-humans and equality, or against it.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is jaw dropping, beautiful and mesmerizing. The CD Projekt RED crew pulled out all the stops. Even though this is on a six year old machine (Xbox 360), the graphics are still awe inspiring. There are lush landscapes, moss covered ruins, mysterious forests, and majestic castles. The Witcher 2 really has it all.

More and more games are becoming more than just games and the Witcher 2 is a perfect example. It's not just a game, it's an experience. Now we just have to wait with bated breath for The Witcher 3 to rear it's epic head.
